Pennsylvania special election: Republicans scramble to explain damaging result against Democrat Conor Lamb

Republicans are struggling to explain what could be an embarrassing result in a Pennsylvania congressional race between Democrat Conor Lamb and the Donald Trump-backed Rick Saccone – in a district the President won by 20 points in 2016. In a stunning show for Democrats, after absentee ballots were counted Mr Lamb is 627 votes ahead out of slightly more than 226,000. Mr Lamb, a first-time candidate and former prosecutor, was declared the “apparent winner” by NBC News and gave a sort of victory speech early on Wednesday morning, but an official announcement has not been made as yet.
